August 18, 2024(GCDC)- Speaking to the Gambella Regional Council, the newly appointed head of state, Mrs. Alemitu Omod, said that she will work hard to answer the basic questions of peace, stability, and development of the people in the Gambella region.
She said that the work started to ensure lasting peace and to continue development should be strengthened in all fields and called on the people of the region to support the government and continue their contribution to the ongoing change.
She emphasized that the region is an area where many nationalities live together and asked everyone to work together to ensure peace and development by strengthening this solidarity. Our region is blessed with natural resources and has resources that survive for others, but due to the conflicts that we have created, the people have not benefited from development as much as desired. All parties are required to work with determination to answer the people's demand for peace and development and move the region to a new phase with sincerity and honesty in their responsibility to serve the people of the region.
She went on to say, that the challenges we face as a region are numerous and complex, but I am confident that with your support and the collective strength of our people, we will overcome them. We will work tirelessly to expand access to quality education, ensuring that our children and youth have the tools they need to thrive in the 21st century. We will invest in our healthcare system, ensuring that every person in Gambella has access to the medical care they deserve, regardless of their social or economic status.
One of the most pressing challenges we face is the ongoing conflict that has plagued our region for far too long. We recognize that this conflict has caused immense suffering and division among our people, and we are committed to taking bold and decisive action to curb it. We will prioritize open and inclusive dialogue, bringing together all stakeholders to address the root causes of the conflict and find lasting solutions that promote peace, reconciliation, and unity.
We will also strengthen our security measures, working closely with the federal government and local communities to ensure the safety and well-being of all Gambellans. But we will do so with a focus on community-based policing, conflict resolution, and restorative justice, rather than heavy-handed tactics that can further exacerbate tensions.
We will champion the cause of sustainable agriculture, empowering our farmers to adopt innovative practices that boost productivity, enhance food security, and protect our fragile ecosystems. We will create an environment that fosters entrepreneurship and small business development, unlocking the boundless potential of our people and driving economic growth.
We will build the infrastructure that connects our communities, linking our villages and towns with reliable roads, bridges, and digital networks, ensuring that no one is left behind in the march towards progress.
But these are not just empty promises. They are the foundations upon which we will construct a Gambella that is more prosperous, more equitable, and more resilient. We will be guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance, ensuring that the voices of all our citizens are heard and their needs are met.
As we take this oath, let us be reminded of the sacred trust that has been placed in us. Let us be inspired by the resilience and determination of the Gambella people, and let us draw strength from their unwavering spirit.
Together, we will forge a future that honors our past, celebrates our present, and secures our prosperity for generations to come.
May God bless Gambella, and may God bless all of you, the people of this extraordinary region.
Thank you, and let the work begin!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Alemitu Omod
Governor of the Gambella Region
