MSF provides healthcare and donates medical supplies to Abol Health Center

December 18, 2023 (GCDC) - MSF is providing healthcare and donations of medical supplies in the Gambella region, Ethiopia.

Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Gambella’s Regional Health Bureau (RHB), Abol’s Health Centre, Gambella Primary Hospital, and Gambella Blood Bank are partnering with communities in Gambella, a region bordering South Sudan, in the southwest of Ethiopia, to strengthen the healthcare system in the region.

On December 12, MSF donated maternity items like clothing, newborn baby essentials, hygiene, and sanitary supplies to Abol Health Centre to support mothers who give birth in Abol town. After the donation of these items, a coffee ceremony took place in Abol Health Centre with the participation of the head of Abol Health Center, local authorities, community representatives, and MSF.

“With the end of the year approaching, we wanted to take the opportunity to express our appreciation for the cooperation with the Abol Health Centre over the past years,” says Joris van Oss, MSF Project Coordinator in Gambella.

“As newborn babies and their mothers are particularly vulnerable, we donated these maternity items to help Abol Health Center support them”.

Everyone present at the ceremony shared their appreciation for the cooperation and collective efforts put into improving the health of the communities living in the region. MSF also confirmed their commitment to continue the cooperation in the coming year. The support given to the Health Centre by MSF dates back to 2019, with water supply provided every month and occasional donations of medical items.

On December 12, MSF also donated life-saving surgical supplies to Gambella Town Primary Hospital. These supplies will be used for surgical activities which will benefit the population of the entire Gambella region.

In 2014, MSF started its activities in Gambella to complement and strengthen the healthcare system by providing primary and secondary healthcare in Kule Health Centre to South Sudanese refugees who live in Kule camp, as well as treating people who come to the Health Centre from outside the camp.

One of the significant challenges facing the healthcare system in the Gambella region is the shortage of blood supplies. MSF is currently in discussions with Gambella Blood Bank to collaborate on blood donation campaigns that would benefit all of the region.
